Who are we?
During 2016 the leaders of the well known Amateur Theatre groups, Sewell Barn Theatre, The Maddermarket Theatre and The Great Hall Theatre Company decided to meet up and discuss ways in which we could all work together to promote Theatre in Norwich and find someway to balance our programs for the enjoyment of our audiences, our actors and our technical crews. This is where we found our voice. Please get in touch for more details or click one of the tabs above.

Since 1921 The Maddermarket Theatre has been staging plays, musicals and other events in the heart of Norwich. Today there is more choice than ever, with twelve in-house plays being staged each year, visiting companies and artists providing classical, opera and contemporary music concerts, stand-up comedy, dance, theatre productions, talks and much more, along with a busy programme of classes and workshops.
We have three performance spaces; our main auditorium, the Emmerson Studio Theatre and the Redwell Maddermarket Bar and Gallery. Each space is unique and hosts productions and events both during the day and in the evening, depending on our programme. |
Great Hall Theatre Company produces six quality shows a year in the Arena style, we are the resident Theatre company at the Assembly House. Our shows are performed in the stunning Noverre Ballroom, a truly beautiful location and we have a dedicated following of theatre goers that love our shows. We schedule a diverse range of shows throughout the year for our ever increasing audience and love to hear their feedback after the show.

The Sewell Barn Company is the "in-house" drama company of the Friends of the Sewell Barn. Its "house style" was established in a series of workshops aimed at bringing together a number of enthusiastic young people and some of the most experienced amateur actors, directors and theatre technicians in the city. It soon developed a reputation for its energetic and physical approach to theatre with an extremely truthful acting style developed in the very intimate setting of the Sewell Barn. This was, in part, the result of the close collaboration between its experienced first Artistic Director Henry Burke and his associate John Dane, drama teacher at neighbouring Blyth Jex school and one of Norwich’s outstanding actors. Since then the Company has established a considerable reputation for its presentation of a varied, challenging and ambitious programme of plays.
